Output Sizes Explained
Modern websites need favicons in multiple sizes to support every browser, device, and platform. Our converter generates all of them from a single upload.
| Size | Platform | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| 16x16 | Web | Browser tab icon — the most common favicon size, displayed in the tab bar of every desktop browser |
| 32x32 | Web | Taskbar and bookmark icon on Windows. Also used as the shortcut icon on higher-DPI screens |
| 48x48 | Web / Windows | Windows site icon and desktop shortcut. Embedded in the ICO file alongside 16x16 and 32x32 |
| 180x180 | Apple | Apple Touch Icon — shown when a user adds your site to their iPhone or iPad home screen |
| 192x192 | Android | Android Chrome home screen icon. Referenced in site.webmanifest for PWA installations |
| 512x512 | PWA | PWA splash screen and high-resolution displays. Required by the Web App Manifest specification for installable apps |
| 150x150 / 310x310 | Microsoft | Windows tile icons for the Start menu. Configured via browserconfig.xml |
Our converter generates 20+ sizes covering all these platforms. You also get an ICO file (multi-size), SVG favicon, and a site.webmanifest — everything you need in one download.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert JPG to favicon?
Yes. Our converter accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, and SVG images. The tool automatically converts your image into all required favicon formats (ICO, PNG, SVG) and sizes. For best results, use a square image with at least 512x512 pixels.
What's the best image size to upload?
Upload a square image of at least 512x512 pixels. This gives the converter enough detail to produce crisp favicons at every size from 16x16 up to 512x512. If your image isn't square, it will be cropped to fit — so center your logo or design before uploading.
Will my image lose quality?
Scaling a large image down preserves quality well. The converter uses high-quality bicubic resampling. Very detailed images (photos, complex illustrations) will naturally lose fine detail at 16x16 or 32x32 — this is unavoidable at those sizes. Simple logos and icons work best for small favicons.
What's the difference between PNG and ICO?
ICO is the traditional favicon format supported since Internet Explorer 5. It can contain multiple sizes in a single file (16x16, 32x32, 48x48). PNG is a modern format with better compression and transparency support. Modern browsers support PNG favicons, but ICO is still needed for maximum compatibility. Our converter generates both formats so you're covered everywhere.
